Two Bands and a Legend

In July 2004 Kongsberg Jazzfestival experienced a musical sensation that made a long-lasting impression on everyone present. Garage-rock band Cato Salsa Experience collided with jazz-trio The Thing together with jazz legend Joe McPhee as bonus. After a series of successful concerts the constellation ended. Many have called for a reunion, and now it’s happening! Two Bands and a Legend will resurface at Kongsberg Jazzfestival on the 6th of July, 2017. We will again experience the magical energy that occurs between these musicians. If you are ever going to use expressions such as raw, rough, energetic, wild and pioneering about music, it must be about this constellation.

The meeting between The Thing and Cato Salsa Experience started at the Kongsberg Jazzfestival in Norway in 2004, when The Thing was offered the chance to invite their favorite rock band Cato Salsa Experience, for a special collaboration. The show was a success and this also led to the critically acclaimed EP “Sounds Like a Sandwich” on Smalltown Superjazzz. It was immediately decided that the two bands and legend should go into studio to record a full-length album. The result is the self-titled album “Two Bands and a Legend”. On the album the bands do their own versions of tracks like “Who The Fuck” by PJ Harvey, and “Baby Talk” by James Blood Ulmer, among others. The CD is the perfect pairing of the dirty 60s influenced free-jazz that the The Thing represents, and the raw and minimalistic garage-rock of Cato Salsa Experience. Most tracks on this album were recorded in only one take with no overdubs. The album has received much attention and has been hailed by Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth, among others.
