Two Bands and a Legend: Cato Salsa Experience, The Thing & Joe McPhee

Concert start: 23:59 Single ticket price: NOK 395

On 2 July 2004, a packed Energimølla in Kongsberg experienced a musical sensation that made a lasting impression on everyone who was there. The garage rock band Cato Salsa Experience toured together with the free jazz trio The Thing with jazz legend Joe McPhee as a super bonus. After a series of successful concerts, the collaboration eventually ceased. Many have called for a reunion, and now it's coming! Two Bands and a Legend is resurrected at the Kongsberg jazz festival on 6 July 2017. We will once again experience the magical energy that arises in the meeting between these musicians. If you're ever going to use expressions like raw, rough, energetic, wild and boundary-breaking about music, it has to be about this constellation.

The meeting between The Thing and Cato Salsa Experience started at the Kongsberg Jazz Festival in 2004, when The Thing got the chance to invite his favorite rock band Cato Salsa Experience for a special collaboration. The show was a success and this also led to the critically acclaimed EP 'Sounds Like A Sandwich' on Smalltown Superjazzz. It was immediately decided that Two Bands and a Legend should go into the studio to record a full-length album. The result was the self-titled album "Two Bands And A Legend". On the album, the band does its own versions of songs such as "Who The Fuck" by PJ Harvey and "Baby Talk" by James Blood Ulmer. The album is the perfect pairing of the dirty 60's free-jazz that The Thing represents and the raw and minimalistic garage rock of the Cato Salsa Experience. Most of the songs on this album were recorded in one take and without overdubs. The album has received a lot of attention and is, among other things, eulogized by Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth.
