Per Zanussi Ensemble

Concert start: 15:30 Single ticket price: NOK 300

In his new ensemble, Per Zanussi has brought 10 of the Nordic region's leading improvisers to interpret new music written especially for them. The ensemble was started in 2013 and has performed several concerts in Norway, and in 2016 their first record will be released. Free improvisation in combination with text, Asian-inspired music and percussive rhythms in the large ensemble form an unheard of and exciting mix.

Bassist Per Zanussi is a very central musician on the Norwegian jazz scene. Both as an instrumentalist, composer and band leader, he has for several years assumed a leading role. He has fronted a number of great bands, such as Wibutee, Zanussi 5, Zanussi 13, Trespass Trio, MZN3 and many more. Now he comes to Kongsberg with his Per Zanussi Ensemble.

When NRK organized its grand finale in the Talentiaden in Oslo Spectrum in 1994, the Bjergstedt Jazz Quartet from Stavanger received the professional jury prize. The 17-year-old Per Zanussi played drums there. It was the start of a career that has led him to his current position as a central and highly recognized musician. He is impressively versatile. He can play steady comp with Petter Wettre and free jazz with Martin Küchen. Among all the different constellations in which he appears, the quintet Zanussi 5 has been a main project for many years. Very few would object to the fact that this is an elite band.

In the Per Zanussi Ensemble, he has brought together ten of the best improvisational musicians we can find in Sweden and Norway. Here, free improvisation meets composed parts. Clear impulses from 'contemporary music' are contrasted against traditional jazz elements. Two well-articulated drummers make sure to put their percussive stamp on the musical course. It all adds up to a particularly tasty brew with a somewhat rare, but very personal and fascinating touch.

The musicians are all performers Zanussi knows well, and the music is composed specifically for them: Sofia Jernberg – vocals, Lotte Anker – sax, Martin Küchen – sax, Morten Barrikmo – clarinets, Bjørnar Habbestad – flute, Ole Henrik Moe jr. – violin, Dag Erik Knedal Andersen – percussion, Per Zanussi – double bass, Raymond Strid – percussion and David Stackenäs – guitar
