Paal Nilssen-Love Large Unit
Kongsberg Jazz Festival No. 50 will be held in July 2014, and a musician of course on such an occasion is the drummer Paal Nilssen-Love. He has played at the Kongsberg Jazz Festival a number of times, in many different constellations. Last year he put together his real-life dream band,'Large Unit', and it is this boundary-breaking band that we will hear at Kongsberg this summer. Here, Paal Nilssen-Love has chosen 10 shockingly good fellow musicians from the absolute top shelf, many of them from the younger generations. Here there are two drummers and two bassists who provide an absolutely beyond base for the enormous energy this band radiates. It conveys a rare power and expressiveness, in a fascinating mixture of planned progressions and freer parts. There are brilliant soloists in the band, and they get good opportunities to put wild ideas into practice.
'Large Unit' is perhaps the most exciting innovation on the Norwegian jazz scene in recent years, and a concert with this powerful group is truly an incomparable musical journey and a tumbling sound experience that you rarely experience.
