Some concerts become embedded in a festival's history. Others become part of its very identity. When Nils Petter Molvær returns to Kongsberg Jazz Festival with KHMER, that's exactly what happens.
In 1999, Molvær performed the work in Kongsberghallen – a concert that has since been remembered as one of the truly great moments in the festival's history. A time juncture. A moment where jazz opened up to new landscapes.
Released in 1998, KHMER is considered one of the most groundbreaking Norwegian jazz albums ever. With heavy grooves, electronic textures and Molvær's characteristic trumpet playing, the album broke the boundaries between jazz, ambient and electronica, and placed Norwegian jazz on the international map.
The fact that Nils Petter Molvær has visited the festival several times over the years speaks volumes about the rare and vibrant relationship between artist and festival. Each meeting has been a new conversation, a new expression.
When KHMER is now presented again at Kongsberg Music Theatre, it is like a living work – shaped by time, experience and new technology. The music is still physical, open and suggestive.
