Murray/Håker Flaten/Nilssen-Love
Norway's heaviest rhythm section and one of jazz's biggest names!
Two Norwegian musicians in the international elite division meet one of jazz's great saxophonists over several decades. It creates great expectations!
David Murray has not only made a name for himself as a saxophonist and bass clarinetist, he has also excelled as a composer and bandleader. Murray has been a central musician in American and international jazz ever since he swept onto the loft scene in New York in the 1970s with bold self-confidence and an unstoppable desire to play. At the time, he was a typical free jazzer, inspired by Albert Ayler and Archie Shepp. But even then you could sense that he was also influenced by old saxophone giants such as Ben Webster and Coleman Hawkins, and his saxophone tone has always revealed his admiration for Ellington saxophonist Paul Gonsalves. The musician we hear today has incorporated all these role models into his playing.
Drummer Paal Nilssen-Love and bassist Ingebrigt Håker Flaten make up one of the most powerful rhythm sections on today's jazz scene, and it was a small sensation when they teamed up with veteran David Murray for the first time in 2019. At the time, the trio played a handful of concerts that took based on old and new compositions by Murray, but also with some fresh detours by Yusef Lateef, Butch Morris and Aretha Franklin. For the first time since 2019, the trio is playing together again, with new material written by all three band members. Guess if expectations are high!
