Opening: 'Mid-Atlantic' – Håkon Kornstad & Oslo jazz ensemble
Håkon Kornstad and the Oslo Jazz Ensemble muster on the Amerikabåten.
Mid-Atlantic was the British-American lingo of cultural life and the political elite from the interwar years. The dialect is history, but the grammar lives on in jazz's heritage. And vice versa - many of the European composers and performers were fascinated by the harmonics of jazz music.
Håkon Kornstad and the Oslo Jazz Ensemble muster on the Amerikabåten as a ship's orchestra with a 100-year contract from 1920 to the present day - or from the Spanish flu to Corona. When sail was replaced by steam, the Atlantic almost seemed like a magnet to composers and musicians on both sides of the famous pond. We know that both Art Tatum and Sergej Rachmaninov are on the passenger list, and that they were blood fans of each other. Not to mention Duke Ellington, who made jazzhits of Rachmaninoff's piano music, while Ravel and Gerschwin went from club to club in Harlem noting cool jazz riffs. Hwhat could Richard Strauss and Gil Evans have talked about over a drink in the bar, and how would Kurt Weill have approached sampling and noise? We don't have all the answers, but we ask some questions that most music enthusiasts have always pondered.
Håkon Kornstad sings opera and plays jazz at a top level, with technical and musical capacity beyond the ordinary. Oslo Jazz Ensemble is one of Europe's foremost large jazz ensembles, and has visited 15 countries all over the world. This summer's edition has 15 performers, and includes some of the country's leading jazz musicians.
