John Scofield Uberjam Band
John Scofield is without a doubt a man with legendary status, and represents a great diversity within the history of jazz. Now he comes to Kongsberg Jazzfestival with his Uberjam band, consisting of Dennis Chambers, Avi Bortnick & Andy Hess.
John Scofield's guitar work has influenced jazz since the late 70s and is still going strong today. Scofield has a very distinctive sound with stylistic diversity and he is a masterful improviser. In terms of genre, his music is often placed somewhere between post-bop, funky jazz and R&B.
After attending Berklee College of Music in Boston, Scofield became a member of the Billy Cobham-George Duke band. In 1977 he played with Charles Mingus, and joined the Gary Burton Quartet. He began his international career as a bandleader and recording artist in 1978. From 1982 to 1985, Scofield toured with Miles Davis. The collaboration with Davis placed him firmly at the forefront of jazz awareness as both musician and composer.
Since then he has led several bands of his own, recorded over 30 albums (many are already classics), and collaborated with modern favorites such as Pat Metheny, Charlie Haden, Medeski, Martin & Wood, Bill Frisell, Brad Mehldau, Mavis Staples, Jack DeJohnette and Joe Lovano – to name a handful.
