Vocalist, songwriter, arranger and producer Jimetta Rose, a central figure in the Los Angeles music scene, is bringing the gospel choir Voices of Creation to a string of European festivals this summer. In Norway, you can get this unique concert experience at both Kongsberg Jazzfestival and Moldejazz in the summer of 2024.
Voices of Creation mainly consists of non-professional singers over several generations, and precisely this has helped to give the choir a unique sound, personality and energy. It is the gospel expression that is the mainstay of the music, but with clear traces of both jazz, soul and funk. The music is spiritual and life-affirming, and it is easy to resort to musical references such as Kamasi Washington, The Staple Singers and Sly Stone.
The debut album of Jimetta Rose & The Voices of Creation consists of both original songs and rearranged cover songs, and reflects Jimetta's vision of limitless music. "This is the new black classical music", she explains. “It's about what it means to be African American today, but also with visions for the future. The music is a taste of what's to come, what we can do, what we've been through, and what we are right now.”
