Kongsberg Jazz Festival on NRK for 25 years

Johan Hauknes, jazz writer, researcher and long-time lecturer at the Kongsberg Jazz Festival, will highlight Jan Horne's TV productions from the years 1967-1994. A number of recordings from the festival's history will be shown, but examples of Jan Horne's other TV work for NRK will also be highlighted.

Jan Horne started at NRK as a film editor. It didn't take long before he became a key director of TV productions at NRK. He worked on this for several decades. He produced a wide range of documentary programs, including about Norwegian emigration to the USA, about the Alta case, and about Jens Bjørneboe and Arne Næss.

Music was his great interest. The series of music productions for NRK is long, with a main emphasis on jazz og folk musicHe has made three large-scale TV series about key jazz musicians; Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Lennie Tristano.

But it is especially his many musical productions from Kongsberg and Molde jazz festival that stands out. In 1967 and 1968, Horne was at the Kongsberg Jazz Festival for the first time, responsible for producing concerts for NRK Television. He was a regular at the festival as an NRK director for more than twenty years, where he made dozens of programs from concerts and from street life during the festival. The fact that Jan Horne was responsible for the production was a guarantee for high quality of NRK productions.

Horne was a skilled drummer. He received good reviews for his drumming at the first National Amateur Jazz Championships in 1961. Gunnar Kullebund's quintet with Horne as drummer came in third place in modern jazz, and the jury particularly highlighted Horne's drumming afterwards. He has for periods filled in for both Stokstad/Jensens Tradband, and for the avant-garde Svein Finnerud Trio, and was otherwise a diligent jam musician.

The lecture is free, lasts 60 minutes and is followed by two of Horne's documentaries from the Kongsberg Jazz Festival.

All performances are at Kongsberg Cinema at Krona. Officials and festival pass holders have free admission to all performances.
