Hilde Marie Holsen & Joshua Abrams solo
It is easy to hear that Hilde Marie Holsen can play the trumpet beautifully. But by combining it with electronic noise, her music becomes even more expressive.
Hilde Marie Holsen from Jølster has created her own niche at the crossroads between jazz, drone and contemporary music. She processes her trumpet’s sound in an electronic universe that she mixes with the melancholy tones of her instrument, shaping a new soundscape that can be both fragile and unstable but also powerful and dynamic.
“The end result is music that is uniquely individual and highly distinctive. Forget any comparisons, Holsen is without parallel. Even more so than Ask did, Lazuli signals the arrival of a bright new star.” All About Jazz
In the spring of 2015, Hilde Marie released her debut album, Ask, on the Hubro label. The album gained massive attention in the international music press, with reviews in The Guardian, The Wire and Quietus, among others. NRK’s programme “Jazzklubben” mentioned it as one of the highlights of 2015. The successor to Ask, Lazuli (also on Hubro) has been described as “almost shockingly perfect”.

Joshua Abrams is an important musician on the highly acclaimed free jazz scene in Chicago, and through his work he’s become a favourite on many clubs and festival on both sides of the atlantic. He has played with artists such as Joe McPhee and Fred Andersen, and collaborated with Tortoise and The Roots. We’re very excited to present a solo concert featuring the double bass at Galleri Åkern.
We’ll get invited in to Abrams’ ongoing experimentation in the solo format, and this concert can serve as both a contrast and a reference to the concert with Natural Information Society at Energimølla later that night.
