Hedvig Mollestad's Weejuns: KALABALIKK
In recent years, Mollestad has consolidated his position as a powerful composer and guitarist within his genre - and beyond.
She has won the Spellemannpris in the Open class two years in a row for her solo releases, and Weejuns is her latest project: A sparkling trio with Ståle Storløkken and Ole Mofjell. The test concert at the Munch Museum in April showed a completely new side of Mollestad and her music - here the principles of long, composed stretches have been compromised, and we are left with an open door into an enormous universe of sparkling interplay and picturesque structures, a feeling of weightlessness where the aspect of time is shaken, where the musicians gather in a large triology, and meet in powerful unison parts. Underneath, however, lies the attraction towards the powerful riffs and beavers, and it is not difficult to associate oneself with both the Rypdal and monumental, but also with the crack between the 60s and 70s, from the Bitches Brew and Mahavishnu era.
Exclusively for the concert at Kongsberg, Mollestad has invited in Shahzad Ismaily (Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, Tom Waits, Marc Ribot, Nels Cline) and Ingrid Laubrock (Mary Halvorson, Kenny Wheeler, Craig Taborn, Tyshawn Sorey), for the work that has been given the title KALABALIKK – originally a Swedish word via Turkish that describes throngs in a crowd, but which in recent times has turned its meaning towards tumults or rebellion in a crowd. Can we expect anarchy? In any case, there will be trouble with Mollestad at Energimølla!
