Hedvig Mollestads Weejuns: KALABALIKK
Hedvig Mollestad is now firmly established as a formidable composer and guitarist across several genres.
She has won major prizes for her solo albums two years running, and here we hear her new project: a dazzling trio with Ståle Storløkken and Ole Mofjell. Their trial concert in Oslo’s Munch Museum in April revealed a new side of Mollestad – her principles of long, through-composed passages give way to an enormous universe of sparkling musical synergy within the trio, and picturesque structures in which we feel weightless and timeless. Nevertheless, there’s an undercurrent of powerful riffs, and it’s not hard to find similarities with Rypdal and his monumental music, but also with the turn of the decade between the 60s and 70s, the era of Bitches Brew and Mahavishnu.
Exclusive in Kongsberg, Mollestad has invited Shahzad Ismaily (Laurie Anderson, Lou Reed, Tom Waits, Marc Ribot, Nels Cline) and Ingrid Laubrock (Mary Halvorson, Kenny Wheeler, Craig Taborn, Tyshawn Sorey) to perform in her work KALABALIKK. A Swedish word from the Turkish, originally describing a large throng of people, kalabalikk is mostly used to denote unrest or fighting in a crowd.
Can we expect anarchy? Who knows, when Mollestad brings kalabalikk to Energimølla!
