I GURLS you will find three of the country's most sought-after musicians, Ellen Andrea Wang, Hanna Paulsberg and Marianna Sangita. With playful excess and rolling confidence, they are a careful and tramp funky unit. The lyrics are direct and the music is intimate, fully acoustic and with an immodest pop touch. There is also soul, rhythmic irresistibility and melodic elegance. At the festival, we experience them together with the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, a central and sought-after institution in Norwegian jazz life.
GURLS entered the Norwegian music scene in 2013, and has since been a sort of musical break for saxophonist Hanna Paulsberg and bassist and vocalist Ellen Andrea Wang. Rohey Taalah was the vocalist in the first edition of the trio; now it is Marianna Sangita (from Broen) who is the central vocalist. GURLS almost immediately had a formidable breakthrough. Fresh and cheeky lyrics - often both ironic and sarcastic - performed lightly, playfully and cheerfully in super musical settings. With their debut album "Run boy, run", they won the Spellemann prize for best jazz album in 2018. GURLS is part of every concert organiser's wish concert, and the trio has played at most major Norwegian jazz festivals. And they have not become less in demand since they started working with Trondheim Jazz Orchestra. The band is very flexible, both in terms of the number of musicians and which musicians are involved. Everything is arranged according to the type of project they will perform. The orchestra has celebrated a number of triumphs, both in Norway and abroad. It has played with such key musicians as Chick Corea, Pat Metheny and Joshua Redman. It has been nominated for the Spellemannsprisen several times, and they received it for their collaboration with Marius Neset in 2014.
