Dinnerkonsert: A Tribute to Hank Mobley
Enjoy a delicious dinner while listening to Kjell Gunnar Hoff sextet, pay homage to perhaps the 1960s most underrated tenor saxophonist.
Hank Mobley lived in the shadow of Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane, the two best known tenor saxophonists in the 1960s and 70s. Only after his death have his tenor playing and his many compositions gradually gained the respect and honor he deserves, as one of the foremost hardbop tenor saxophonists in the 60’s.
Mobley was also a significant composer. In addition to his own recordings, he wrote a lot for Art Baleky & The Jazz Messengers, where he himself was an important member in the first years. We also find several of his songs on recordings by trumpeters Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard.
The sextet performs many of his famous and unknown compositions and some of Lee Morgans, whom with which he made many recordings. This sextet variation of Tribute to Hank Mobley played during the Anniversary Festival at Kongsberg in 2014, was on a small mini-tour in Norway in spring of 2016 and at the Saulkrasti Jazz Festival in Latvia in 2016.
