Dinner Concert: A Tribute to Hank Mobley
Enjoy a delicious dinner while listening to Kjell Gunnar Hoff's sextet tribute to perhaps the most underrated tenor saxophonist of the 1960s.
Hank Mobley lived a life in the shadow of Sonny Rollins and John Coltrane, the two greatest tenor saxophonists of the 1960s and 70s. Only after his death have his tenor playing and his many compositions gradually gained the respect and honors that he deserves, as one of the leading hardbop tenors of the 60s.
Mobley was also a significant composer. Besides his own recordings, he wrote a lot for Art Baleky & The Jazz Messengers, where he himself was an important member in the early years. We also find several of his songs on recordings with trumpeters Lee Morgan and Freddie Hubbard.
The sextet performs many of his well-known and unknown compositions and some by Lee Morgan, with whom he made many recordings. This sextet version of Tribute to Hank Mobley played during the anniversary festival at Kongsberg in 2014, was on a small mini-tour in Norway in the spring of 2016 and at the Saulkrasti Jazz Festival, Latvia in 2016.
Included in the ticket is a concert and a two-course dinner menu consisting of:
- Mustard-glazed sirloin of pork with herb crust, fresh asparagus, pickled red onion, fried mushrooms, potato terrine and creamy green pepper sauce
- Strawberry mousse with marinated strawberries, strawberry sorbet and strawberry crumble
Roy Nikolaisen (trumpet), Kjell Gunnar Hoff (tenor saxophone), Halvard Kausland (guitar), Madars Kalnins (piano), Andris Grunte (bass), Kaspars Kurdeko (drums)
