Songs of Ascent – Dense, heartfelt and concentrated, melodically strong and evocative.
For several decades, Dave Douglas has been at the forefront both as a trumpeter, composer and band leader. He is in constant development and constantly comes up with new band constellations and new musical ideas. Now he brings a new quartet to the Kongsberg Jazz Festival!
Creative musicians never cease to amaze. David Douglas we have met in many contexts, from cooperation with John ZornMore, for separate groups from trio size and up. So in 2020 he came up with something completely new, Songs of Ascent, where he based his compositions on the Book of Psalms in the Old Testament. This music came out on record in 2022 and caused a great stir.
But Dave Douglas could not let go of this drug; he wanted to make a denser, more heartfelt and more concentrated version in which the trumpet plays the leading role to an even greater extent. The melodically strong and atmospheric music from Songs of Ascent now becomes even more expressive and creates contact - where the poetically strong trumpet is framed and encompassed by the other three musicians. We look forward to experiencing this music on Saturday at EnergiMølla!
