Cassandra Wilson, one of the world's greatest jazz artists and a jazz diva of rank, is coming to the Kongsberg Jazz Festival with her tribute to Billie Holiday.

On April 7 this year it was 100 years since Billie Holiday was born, and on the same day Cassandra Wilson's tribute to Billie Holiday, Coming Forth By Day, published. Many artists have wanted to mark their admiration and respect for the great Billie Holiday by releasing records in which they interpret the well-known Holiday classics. This is of course risky. One easily ends up in the shadow of the icon, and it is rarely beneficial to invite direct comparison with the original. But Cassandra Wilson's interpretations stand confidently on their own two feet. She performs classics such as 'Don't Explain' and 'All of Me' completely on her own terms. She is confident in her musical point of view and her approach to this material, which she creates sine versions of the famous Billie Holiday lyrics. She highlights these texts in such a personal, heartfelt and emotional way that we sense a new closeness to them.

Cassandra Wilson has come a long way musically since joining the M-Base Collective in New York with Steve Coleman in the 1980s. With jazz as the stable foundation, she has visited blues, country, pop and world music. Out of all this, she has refined a highly personal style, characterized by empathy, warmth and sincerity. And still we can sense, somewhere deep in the song, the early impulses of Abbey Lincoln and Betty Carter.

In the magazine 'Jazzwise', Stuart Nicholson interviewed Cassandra Wilson on the occasion of the release of Coming Forth By Day, and he concluded thus: "It is perhaps here that Cassandra Wilson finally becomes the singer she has always wanted to be, a singer of the past, the present and the future".

Cassandra Wilson (vocals and guitar), Kevin Breit (guitar), Charlie Burnham (violin), Robby Marshall (woodwinds), Jon Cowherd (piano and keyboard), John Davis (drums)
