NB! The concert with the Carla Bley Trio has unfortunately been cancelled. Do you have a ticket? See important information below:
Carla Bley has had a varied and rich career. She had barely turned 20 when she started playing with central New York musicians. She quickly distinguished herself as a composer, and is behind key works in jazz history such as "A Genuine Tong Funeral", which was recorded by Gary Burton, and "Liberation Music Orchestra" (Charlie Haden). A high point in his career as a composer in the large format was what some call a jazz opera: "Escalator Over The Hill".
Carla Bley has distinguished herself as a composer, arranger and orchestra leader to a greater extent than as an instrumentalist. She has refined the impulses she has taken from Duke Ellington, Thelonius Monk, The Beatles, Eric Satie and Kurt Weill into a highly appealing and personal expression. She has a unique ability to create catchy, melodic compositions, and many of them have entered the standard jazz repertoire, songs such as Ida Lupino og Sing Me Softly Of The Blues.
In recent years, her main project has been the trio with Andy Shepard and Steve Swallow. In this context, all her melodic and lyrical features come to the fore. The trio has so far released two records. About the last one, Andiando el Tiempo, writes Johan Hauknes on the website salty peanuts*: "After Keith Jarret's Standard trio is history, this is the very best of intuitive communication and joint creation of music that we have in international jazz at this level today."
Carla Bley (piano, comp.), Steve Swallow (bass), Andy Sheppard (sax)
