Since the 1990s, American Brad Mehldau has been a central figure on the international jazz scene. During his very active career, the critically acclaimed pianist has released a number of records in both solo and trio format, in addition to having participated in multiple collaborative projects. Through frequent touring all over the world, he has built up a large and wide audience, also far outside jazz circles.
Brad Mehldau plays music that hits both inveterate indie rockers and dedicated jazz listeners, largely because he is influenced by music within the pop and rock genres. He is equally known for sparkling and unique versions of Radiohead and Beatles songs, as classic jazz standards and his own compositions. The piano playing is characterized by both spontaneity and structure, and the music appears energetic and lyrical at the same time.
This has made Brad Mehldau one of the biggest names in modern jazz today.
Brad Mehldau can be heard in various constellations, and he has collaborated with figures such as Pat Metheny and the classical soprano Anne Sofie von Otter. He comes to the Kongsberg jazz festival with a band consisting of Larry Grenadier on bass and Jeff Ballard on drums - a trio that has garnered praise for its record releases and concerts worldwide.
