Billy Cobham has for years stood as the role model for all fusion drummers. Now he comes to Kongsberg Jazzfestival with his current project: Billy Cobham's Time Machine.
Jazz fusion drummer Billy Cobham was noticed early on for his rarely exuberant and powerful drumming. In 1969 he established the well-known jazz-rock band Dream with brothers Brecker and John Abercrombie.
The success of this band quickly led him to the very central musical constellations of the time around 1970: Miles Davis with the records Live-Evil, A Tribute to Jack Johnson and Bitches Brew and Mahavishnu Orchestra with The Inner Mounting Flame and Birds of Fire.
In 1973 he recorded his first record under his own name - Spectrum. It was an immediate success and became a breakthrough for jazz-fusion music with a large audience. It is usually seen as an inspiring and significant milestone.
Over fifty years after Dream and Spectrum, Cobham with his current band, Billy Cobham's Time Machine, wants to return to this music. Cobham is back, and is going to show the audience that he can still run a band with swagger and power and groovy rhythms.
