COMMISSIONED PIECE: AREA 51 - MORTEN QVENILD
The innovative pianist, composer and bandleader Morten Qvenild has been engaged to write new music for a brand new band that unites some of the greatest jazz musicians Kongsberg has reared up; Hanne Hukkelberg on vocals and the two guitarists Ivar Grydeland and Tom Hasslan. As a finishing touch, he has also engaged one of our foremost writers; Frode Grytten.
The Jazzfestival and Energimølla are behind the idea of this commissioned piece, which has a common focus about honoring the unique music scene in Kongsberg.
Area 51 is the name of the secret area in Nevada where the US military is testing aircraft and weapons systems. It’s also the control center for advanced drones. It was at this location where the legendary U2 plane was tested as well as important developments of the technology behind the lunar missions. The music will unfold in this landscape, a place where elements of desert country and techno coexist. The commissioned piece will reflect the division between the natural and the manmade, the dynamic and controlled.
All the musicians have their origin in Kongsberg, except Frode Grytten that could shed light on the theme of their Odda perspective, a city which in history is comparable to Kongsberg.
What the public will be served in this commissioned piece can hardly be predicted in advance, but it is reasonable to guess that the music will be both lyrical, beautiful, rhythmic and expressive!
Morten Qvenild (composition, vocals, keyboards), Hanne Hukkelberg (vocals), Ivar Grydeland (steel guitar, acoustic guitar and banjo), Tom Hasslan (electric guitar), Frode Grytten (text and spoken word), Stig Gunnar Ringen (sound design)
