For many years, Kongsberg Jazz has presented a triple concert under the banner “Avanthagen”, in the historical surroundings of Smeltehytta. Avanthagen, with its experimental music profile, has become an essential part of the festival. As the name (“Avantgarden”) suggests, the music played here is not the sort you hear every day, but the event is becoming more and more popular with our festival audience.

This year’s Avanthagen marks a reunion with nyMusikk, Norway’s centre for experimental music and sound art. We look forward to developing this collaboration over the coming years. This year as in previous years we present three concerts, each one of which should enthuse even the most experienced of our festival-goers.

Sofia Jernberg & Agnes Hvizdalek
Two outstanding singers on one stage!

Sofia Jernberg is a Swedish/Ethiopian singer and composer. As a singer, one of her primary interests is to develop the voice’s “instrumental” characteristics. She has for example developed techniques for split tone singing, pitchless singing and distorted vocals.

Agnes Hvizdalek is an improvisational performer with voice as her primary instrument. Her abstract vocal music expresses her dedication to new music and fascination for the human voice, and she works over a wide range of genres, from jazz, noise and electronic dance music to contemporary classical music.

Isabelle Duthoit solo
Expect wild and fantastically detailed improvisations

French improvisation artist Isabelle Duthoit is well known for her collaborations with trumpeter Franz Hautzinger. Last year at Oslo’s Blow Out! festival in Oslo she impressed the audience in her performance with Lene Granger and Hamid Drake. In Kongsberg she will give a solo performance, on vocals and clarinet.

Summer Strings
Summer Strings is a project curated by conductor and violinist Ilan Volkov. Over the last few years he has gathered a group of star string players to perform at Café Oto in London, and now he brings the idea to Kongsberg in this collaboration with nyMusikk.
