Pat Metheny
The Jazz don't have many megastars, but Pat Metheny is definitely one of them. In the summer, he will come to the Kongsberg Jazz Festival to play this year's opening concert. This will be the Norwegian premiere of Pat Metheny's new super quartet - and it will also be the festival's first concert in Kongsberg's new, beautiful concert hall, the Musikkteatert.
There are not many jazz musicians who have reached such a large audience as guitarist Pat Metheny. Ever since he formed the Pat Metheny Group with Lyle Mays in the 1970s, he has been a favorite with critics and audiences alike. He has played with a number of greats, from Sonny Rollins and Ornette Coleman to Chick Corea and Joni Mitchell. He has written film scores and received an impressive 17 Grammy awards. In his luggage, he has musical influences from several different genres. Although he is a distinctly jazz improviser, it is not difficult to trace both rock and Americana in his musical expression; and it is always rhythmic and melodic with great audience appeal. For the concert at Kongsberg, he brings three elite musicians in his brand new quartet: Antonio Sanchez and Linda Oh on drums and bass, as well as one of Britain's best jazz pianists, Welshman Gwilym Simcock.
