Our friends in the Oslo Jazz Festival had this concert as the opening concert in 2018. We pick up the thread and recreate the magical atmosphere that was created in Den Norske Opera & Ballett during the premiere. There will be many great moments when some of Norway's most exciting musicians pay tribute to the now 76-year-old legend Joni Mitchell.
"... staying the same is boring. And change is interesting", said Joni Mitchell to Rolling Stone Magazine in 1979. Wanting a fresh approach to Joni Mitchell's rich song material, Anja Lauvdal was chosen to lead the project. Lauvdal is one of the most interesting young musicians and composers we have in Norway and is known from bands such as Broen, Skadedyr and Moskus. To Kongsberg, she has brought a stellar team of musicians with her to give Joni Mitchell the attention she deserves.
Dagsavisen gave the concert in Oslo 6 out of 6 and writes:
After the concert, we must also be able to state that the festival made a very good choice when they asked Anja Lauvdal to take on the job of jumping after Mitchell. Already during the first song, the musical leader of a star team of young Norwegian jazz musicians makes it clear that this is not going to be a plank ride. On the contrary. They unleash the Mitchell catalog with a liberating and seductive creativity, in what promises to be a brilliant evening.
In 2018, Joni Mitchell turned 75, and it is just over 50 years since her debut album came out. Although her career started on the acoustic folk scene, she had a musical openness and curiosity that led her well into the jazz landscape. Mitchell himself embraced jazz and worked closely with jazz icons such as Jaco Pastorius, Wayne Shorter, Pat Metheny, Charles Mingus and Herbie Hancock.
