Legacy
The fascinating and gripping story of when Scandinavia became a creative haven for black American jazz stars from racism and the long arm of the law – told by their children, who, for better or worse, still live with their fathers' life choices.
In the 1950s, 60s and 70s, Scandinavia suddenly became a mecca for the most innovative music of the time: jazz. It became a haven for black American jazz stars. Here they could be far more at peace with the police and the racism that persecuted them in the United States, and practice their art without being disturbed and persecuted. Here they could be stars and be praised as they deserved. And then many of them started families and had children.
It's the adult children of superstars who Dexter Gordon, Don Cherry, Sahib Shihab, Joe Harris and Quincy Jones who tells the story in 'Legacy'. A story about racism, segregation and political activism. But also a story about the consequences the children had to pay for their fathers' freedom. And then of course it is also a story about music, and a gold mine of a period in Scandinavian music history.
