Acta Musicae: Oh Freedom
Acta Musicae dedicates an evening in Kongsberg church to the genre Spirituals.
This concert in Kongsberg church is entirely devoted to the genre Spirituals. The liberation songs of African-American slaves formed the basis for the Jazz genre, which developed a few decades later. The African-American texts are taken from the Bible. The slaves' longing for freedom characterizes the songs. The music seemed unifying for the slaves who had been deprived of their freedom. Musically, the spirituals are interesting with their blue tones, syncopation and call-and-response structure.
The fight for freedom is at least as relevant today. That's why the women's choir Acta Musicae wants to emphasize the timeliness of the message by retrieving
bring out the groove and the basic tones that characterize Spirituals.
The choir celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2022.
