Acta Musicae: Oh Freedom!
An evening of spirituals in Kongsberg Church, with women’s choir Acta Musicae
This concert in Kongsberg Church is devoted to spirituals, the religious songs sung by African American slaves that would later lay the foundations for jazz. Many of the texts are from the Bible, and the slaves’ longing for freedom permeates a lot of the songs. The spirituals were songs for groups of people; they were a source of comfort, but also of solidarity for the African population in the American colonies. Musically, the songs are interesting for their “blue notes”, syncopated rhythms and the characteristic call and response structure.
The fight for freedom is no less relevant today – which is why women’s choir Acta Musicae (which celebrates its 25th anniversary in 2022) has chosen to focus on the fascinating and moving spirituals genre for this concert.
